About the city

Rouen is the historical capital city of Normandy, in northwestern France on the River Seine, and currently the capital of the Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy) région. Once one of the largest and most prosperous cities of medieval Europe, Rouen was the seat of the Exchequer of Normandy in the Middle Ages.

Rouen is known for its Notre Dame cathedral, with its Tour de Beurre (butter tower), but other famous structures are also religious monuments: Church of Saint Maclou, Church of Saint Ouen and the Church of Jeanne d’Arc.

Rouen is a fascinating city year-round, with lots of things to do in both summer and winter. However, most visitors arrive between May and September when the weather is the most reliable, colder than other parts of France, but still mild.
